I was experiencing a similar issue as given in http://www.mail-archive.com/ganglia-general@lists.sourceforge.net/msg05400.html
My error was that I had the web front-end (conf.php) using the gmetad xml_port when in fact it should be using the interactive_port. It was hard to diagnose. Telnetting to the xml_port would show all the hosts. Sometimes the web front end would show partial information and sometimes it would show all information.
