Hi, Seeing that I'm a bit late for the party, I'll keep it brief. The curious can read my Road To Lisp [1] for more details.
I'm here because I use Lisp to make a living, I need the best tools I can get, and I believe it's every craftsperson's responsibility to look after his tools. I think Peter's notes [2] and statement about inclusion [3] pretty much say it all. At this time, I will only emphasize what I perceive as the need for a single canonical collection of implementation independent libraries. I'm not talking about a directory of links to various authors' sites. I'm talking about one site (mirrors aside) with consistent layout and navigation, one agreed upon set of standards for documentation and testing, and one ASDF-INSTALL compatible repository. This, of course, is not to disparage the work of those behind common-lisp.net, cliki.net, clocc.sourceforge.net, or the countless other collections out there. Quite the opposite. 'countless' is the problem. I don't think I need to expound the virtues of FreeBSD ports or Debian packages over googling for tarballs. In fact, maybe FreeBSD ports and Debian packages are models worth considering: Where possible, focus on submitting patches for bugs, test cases, consistency, and documentation back to upstream authors. In any case, I'm here to play hard :-) Regards, Mike [1] http://wiki.alu.org/Michael_J_Forster [2] http://www.lispniks.com/cl-gardeners/notes.html [3] http://www.lispniks.com/pipermail/gardeners/2005-December/000032.html -- Michael J.
