Let me play devil's advocate here.  You have an undefined term in your 
paragraph: implementable.  What is implementable in SBCL (which has 
good thread support to start with) may not be implementable elsewhere 
and the implementors may be reluctant to rework the insides of their 
code.  At a minimum I would try to work out an implementation on a 
platform with non-SBCL thread support.  In that way you will be able to 
see what are some of the problems ahead.
