Hello Gardeners, My name is Harrison and I live in Africa. I’ve been lurking on this list since last year and have been following pretty much all the discussions. The reason it has taken me this long to post anything here is that I am a total stranger to the world of programming (heard about it once over 10 years ago when in high school, and never again until 2005 when I came upon a link in the New York Times to the MIT Open Course Ware, EECS. Immediately I downloaded SICP, read the first few chapters and played around with Scheme. Googling for more Lisp programming took me to Paul Graham’s website which in my case opened the main door to the world of programming. I downloaded On Lisp, did the first few chapters and found it too advanced. Then I obtained ANSI Common Lisp, and also devoured every one of his essays. Later, I found Peter’s Practical Common Lisp website, downloaded the book and LispBox which I am now studying. My curiosity about the things that make computers work was finally getting the attention it needed, and my passion for the art that I once thought dead was being fueled. (At one time I was made to believe that Microsoft had written all the software there was to write!)). At this time I feel a little bit more confident to add my voice to this ongoing discussion. I still don’t know that much, but would nonetheless want to use the little I know to help out wherever I can; it will help me to learn while at the same time making a contribution to making this great language more accessible to yet more new people like myself. What would you recommend I do? I believe I have a flair for tracking down minute details and formulating easy-to-understand examples, when I know what I am talking about :-). Getting something to do from this list will further motivate me to buckle down and really learn Lisp. I am currently using LispBox CLISP on Windows.
