I am glad the UF has been at the forefront of this type of communication with boosters, there are so many NCAA rules that are very easy to break without even meaning to. I think that what UF went through in the 80's has made them probably the best run and managed athletic department and boosters in the country. Just one more thing to be proud of!

Fall 2008EXTRA BENEFITS & STUDENT-ATHLETES
The topic that generates the most questions for our office relates to extra benefits and what can and can not be provided to student-athletes within NCAA rules. Here is a brief overview of the NCAA extra benefit rule. Any special arrangement made by an institutional staff member or a booster that provides a student-athlete or the studentathlete’s friend or family a benefit that is not expressly authorized by NCAA rules is an extra benefit. If a benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their relatives and friends, it is not considered to be an extra benefit.EMPLOYMENT
A student-athlete may receive legitimate employment earnings from authorized on or off campus employers (including those who are boosters) throughout the school year if certain guidelines are followed. Prior to employment, the student- athlete must obtain appropriate signatures for approval on the Student-Athlete Employment Agreement form, which can be picked up from the Life Skills Coordinator or the Compliance Office. The student-athlete must be eligible academically to compete for the institution. The compensation received may not include any payment or benefit from the employer based on the student-athlete’s athletics ability, reputation or fame. It must only be for work actually performed and is at a rate that is equal to the going rate for similar services in that area.Boosters may employ prospective student-athletes as long as the institution does not arrange the employment, the opportunity for employment is available on an equal basis to all applicants who qualify for the position, and the prospect is paid only for work performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locale for similar services. Violations of the employment rules may result in the student- athlete being declared ineligible and may be permanently dismissed from the team. The University of Oklahoma case is the is the most recent violation where student- athletes received compensation for work that they did not perform. Because of these violations, Oklahoma had the following penalties imposed on them:
- Permanent dismissal of two members of the football team.
- During the 2006-07 school year, a nonrenewal of the dismissed football athlete’s scholarships.
- A prohibition of at least three years of student-athletes from working at Big Red Sports and Imports (the employer guilty of providing the extra benefits).
- Disassociation of the individual who supervised the players while they worked at Big Red, for at least five years from any involvement with the athletics department.

Housing has been another area of concern. A studentathlete may live off-campus but must be charged rent equivalent to that of others living in the same place. Student- athletes may not receive discounts that are given to them because of their athletics ability, reputation, or fame. This rule extends to friends and family. Friends and family members of a student-athlete may not receive discounted housing either. If a family member or friend is found guilty of receiving this extra benefit, it would have the same effect on the student-athlete as if the student-athlete had received the benefit.REMEMBER, ALWAYS ASK BEFORE YOU ACTShould you have any questions regarding any rules or regulations please contact our Compliance Office at (352) 375-4683 ext. 6022 or visit gatorzone.com/compliance
