Oh man, JNene! What a memory you have.

And I agree. Helen Reddy was the absolute worst in my experience. I don't
know what they were thinking when they booked her. She even made a lame joke:
"if you say UF, do others say FU?" Needless to say, she was roundly booed for
that one.

For me, the really fun part of Growl was the paper fight. Do they even still
do that, or did some insurance company tell the university that it had to stop?

Other random memories:

People booing Doug Dickey in 1978. IIRC, a disgusted Dickey didn't even
introduce the seniors, and just walked off.

Lying down on the field to watch the fireworks show (after I had consumed way
too much alcohol). The explosions seemed to be heading right toward me.
Rocket Man.

Chris Collinsworth, at that point playing in the NFL, making a surprise
appearance to introduce Head Coach Charley Pell as "the best thing ever to
happen to the University of Florida."

And one that I have never forgotten: A Gainesville weatherman from TV20, a very
skinny guy (think his name was Mel), standing on the stage in 1977, telling us
that "we are not Gator fans; we are Gators. That is a very important
difference."

One other thought, early in my time at UF, I asked an older student if he was
going to attend Growl. He said that he had stopped attending once they began
to charge for it. His idea was that Gator Growl is supposed to be a pep rally,
run (for better or worse) by students, and that it should not be professional
or slick, and really didn't require a big name entertainer to validate it. He
said it is supposed to be relaxed and fun, that's all.

At the time I thought of him as a bit of an anarchonism, but as time has
passed, I have come to appreciate his point of view.

Go Gators!!!!

It is for the Blue Key producers. They need to not offend their
future employers. Many alumni still consider Growl part of
indoctrinating their young into Gatorhood. And the kiddies can't see
Mommy & Daddy laugh at the vulgar jokes. I know one Blue Key alum who
had a limo driver on call to take his 15 yo daughter and her friends
away from Growl when the comedians came on for a frat/sorority row
tour. And that was 2 years ago!
Ken is right, Bob Hope was invited back because he was so well
received the first time. The problem was he was filming it for a TV
special and he actually asked the audience to react better as he
repeated jokes. And repeated, and repeated. Then he chastised us for
not singing along with his guest, Irene Cara (Flashdance). The TV
crew was getting the audience singing along, but Hope & Cara could
not hear that mid-field. They did hear the BOOS after Hope's berating
of the audience.
One of my friends got married the day of Hope's second appearance.
They had the Hilton suite next to Bob Hope. They said he was on his
balcony for several hours post-Growl asking his producers why he
could not hear that the audience was laughing and singing along.
(What a wedding night memory...)
The worst Growl ever, in my opinion, was Helen Reddy. I've only
missed one since 1963. (I think it was Howie Mandel.)

Sloan said Carvey is a choice that alumni can trust not to be

Williams; vulgar or not.
Is this really the same concern that it was in the 80s?
