I agree 100%! I was a die-hard Dolphins fan growing up, but the two strikes soured me. I tried to forgive them after the first one, but it just wasn't the same, and then the second one just killed me. Once they got the attitude of "I can't afford to play this game for only 1/2 million $ per year" - I tuned out. I would rather go watch a high school football game or a small college game. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [gatortalk] Re: Finebaum: Is Urban Meyer on way out at Florida? From: "Shane Ford" <goufgat...@bellsouth.net> Date: Sat, July 11, 2009 10:03 pm To: <Gatortalk@googlegroups.com> Another angle to think about going pro is what Pitino said after leaving the Celtics. He said some thing to the effect of trying to motivate players that make 10 times your salary and really have NO desire to better themselves is no "easy" task, or some thing to that effect. Coach Meyer has a psychologically background and soem thing tells me after reading a story back in 2004 or 2005 about Utah's RB that served prison time and how Coach and Shelley mentored him and helped him to redirect his life's focus makes me think he's a college coach trough and through. I've always thought his "fascination" with Coach Bellicheck is more on a professional level. No matter your feelings about the Patriots, you have to give it up to them for what they have done their in the modern NFL. This salary cap structure and FA was supposed to kill any and all dynastys and bring about true competitiveness for all teams. Some how, Kraft and Bellichick have figured a way around that and made a system that makes them competitive year in and year out. I think that level of sustainable success in a system that is not supposed to allow that is what intrigues Coach Meyer. In some ways, the SEC has been shaping up to look more and more like the NFL system. Hasn't it? I sure hope he doesn't go pro either. I grew up loving NFL football and now I almost can't even stand it. Any way....... I think this is correct about Meyer staying with us . . . unless he is lured away by the NFL. Now I think any sane, rational coach would always choose college over the professional game. However, Meyer's relationship with Bill Bellichick concerns me at times. Especially if we win another NC, Meyer may figure he has done everything he can at the college level, and decide to see if he can motivate millionaire professionals the way his friend Bill can. Or if he concludes he has built a machine at Florida, and isn't as interested in maintaining it as he was in building it, he may look for the broader notoriety of the (boring) NFL. I hope this doesn't happen, but I see it as a possibility. Go Gators!!!! Ken B. The 2 biggest reasons he won't go to Notre Dame is 1). National recruiting and 2). Much tougher academic entrance standards. He has already stated that he doesn't want to be on the road 365 trying to recruit and ND does not have a local talent pool to pull from. We were fortunate enough to win the service of Coach Meyer in 2005 and he's going to be a Gator until he walks away from the game. I think he was in a differnet place in his life when he made those comments about ND being his dream job any way. I said a lot of stupid things whne I was younger, and I'm glad no one still holds me to them. I don't know that Paul Finebaum panders. He was very aggressive in his criticism of Alabama back in the Mike Dubose days, and he has written some pieces on Tennessee over the years that make me wonder if he is welcome back on campus. Of course, Spurrier is an expert on Urban Myer. ---------- I believe that is correct, that the Spurrier comments came via Finebaum. Based on his columns over the years, I get the sense they are close, or at least as close as a coach and a columnist can possibly be. Since I’m speculating (i.e., pulling this out of my butt), I may as well go all the way: if Spurrier is the source of this, I wonder if it his way of taking a shot at Meyer because Meyer took a shot at Shane Matthews. Finebaum’s piece criticizes Meyer for that episode. We can see from some of the recent articles that the “Meyer leaving” rumor is already having an influence on 2010 recruiting. I would love to see Meyer come out and forcefully address it in the media, and end this once and for all. Go Gators!!!! Ken B.
