Florida had not won an SEC football title and obviously, no national title. florida had just won its first and only SEC men's basketball title. florida had never won the SEC tournament. florida had only made the ncaa tournament 3 times. however, norm sloan was about to be fired and replaced by don devoe in the fall of 1989. florida football and florida basketball were in trouble from the NCAA. florida state had just embarrassed florida in tallahassee in 11/88 and was starting its run of top 5 finishes. in the last 20 years, there have been 8 SEC titles (maybe 10 but two were not counted in the early 1980s) and one title taken away in football. 3 national titles. men's basketball has won 3 sec titles, 3 sec tournament titles, and two national titles. florida has been to the final four more times (4) than they had ncaa tournament appearances prior to 20 years ago.
