Coach Houston Nutt said in a news release the player has been released from his national letter of intent. Hornsby, who was already on probation in Florida for a credit card fraud conviction, pleaded not guilty in Oktibbeha County, Miss., Circuit Court and had a trial date set for Nov. 2. "I am releasing Jamar Hornsby and he will not be a member of our football team," Nutt said in the release. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future." Neither Nutt nor Hornsby's attorney, Steve Farese Sr., returned messages left by The Associated Press on Friday. The 22-year-old safety from Jacksonville, Fla., faces up to 20 years in prison. He also could be forced to serve four years in Florida for violating his probation. Bill Cervone, the state attorney for the area around Gainesville, where Hornsby previously played for the Gators, told The Associated Press he will now alert a judge of the indictment. "He doesn't have to be convicted (for a revocation to happen), but he's not going to get revoked just because he's been charged," Cervone said. "The commission of an offense that violates his probation has to be proven." This is the second time Hornsby's been denied a chance to play in the Southeastern Conference. Urban Meyer kicked him off the Florida team following his conviction for using a dead friend's credit card to run up thousands of dollars in charges. He played in eight games and had five tackles in 2007, but was suspended for five games for selling his complimentary tickets, a violation of NCAA rules. Hornsby appeared to get his life and career back on track after playing at East Mississippi Community College last year. He had 111 tackles and two interceptions last season and was named the MVP of the Mississippi junior college northern region. He signed a national letter of intent to play for the Rebels in February, but on March 1 he was arrested following a late-night fender bender in a McDonald's drive-through in Starkville. Police said he attacked the man who bumped into his rear bumper while waiting in line. He was originally accused of using brass knuckles and taking a small amount of money from the man, but the indictment did not mention the weapon or the theft. In an interview earlier this week, Farese said he hopes if the case gets to trial a jury would be allowed to consider the lesser offense of simple assault because no weapon was used. Hornsby also could accept a plea deal if one is offered. That may not make a difference when it comes to the judge's decision in Florida, though. Cervone said a judge would likely take a "dim" view of any violation. "The point is you're on probation," he said. "Keep your nose clean.
