Several schools are doing this "head coach in waiting" thing.  And the experts are split as to whether it is a good thing or a bad thing.

In some cases it seems to work very well.  In other cases - like FSU - it does not work well at all.

the idea is that it provides continuity for the players - and more importantly for new recruits.

Imagine if you were a recruit at FSU.  You know Bowden is old and is on the way out.  You have no idea what is coming next - what coach, what style of offense/defense, whether the team will be any good, etc.  A HUGE leap of faith.

I think that the reason it does not work for FSU is because half of the FSU alumni are willing to let Bowden retire whenever he feels like it.  Whereas the other half of FSU alumni want to win and see Bowden as the problem (rightly so) and got Fisher hired to right the program.

Some have suggested that FSU alumni are the ones that actually blew up the whole NCAA mess because the alumni thought it would force Bowden out sooner.

As far as your original question goes - blame Jimbo - I don't think that you can.  The offense appears to be able to move the ball.  It appears that defense is the problem.

Acc Stats:

Scoring Defense #11

Rushing Defense #12
Passing Defense #12
Passing Offense #2
Passing Offense Eficiency #5
Passing Defense Efficiency #12

So it is actually $#%$^ Mickey Andrews and Chuck Amato that are the problem.  And they are suppose to be two of the best defensive coaches in the business.

Its no secret that Fisher and Andrews/Amato do not like each other and Andrews/Amato need to start packing as soon as Fisher is named the head coach.

But I find it hard to believe that Andrews/Amato would coach this bad.  After all - ACC offenses are not very good and stopping them is very easy.

What's the point of having a 'HC-in-waiting'? What's the benefit for that guy to do a good job now when he is not a HC yet? Any loss he can blame current coach, not him. In fact, it would make things very easy for him if current coach has a disaster season.
Just wondering what is the real situation at F$U.
