I still have the "gunslinger" article that was posted the summer before Doug started playing, and I was as hopeful as anyone. However, the sight of the LSU fans pulling down their goal posts after his "hangover" game is forever burned into my memory. 1) Back in '97, I didn't expect Doug Johnson to step up and be another Danny. However, we had been told that he had such a gun for an arm, that while he might take a some time to develop his decision-making skills, his physical talents would provide us with a dimension we had lacked under Danny. So at the time, I thought that our offense would look different, but that with some new tools, it would still be lethal. (Kinda like what we're telling ourselves now). I also figured that Spurrier recruited Johnson, and that he knew what he was doing. In addition, I figured that Spurrier could turn just about any reasonably talented QB in a contender for SEC player of the year. 2) I think Oliver really put his finger on the difference between Brantley and Johnson: maturity. I don't know if that difference is due solely to personality, or if a contributing factor is the fact that Brantley has already had three years in the system, and Johnson was thrown in as a starter as a true sophmore (thank you Bobby Sablehaus). Either way, we should not see a big a drop off this year as we saw in 1997, IMO. But it should be an interesting year, as much as because of Urban's situation as anything else. If we get a little bit of luck, we might surprise everyone and find ourselves playing for the NC. Go Gators!!!! Ken B. I have a very good feeling about Brantley - didn't have that with Doug. I am sooo excited for the season to begin!! Were you really confident Doug Johnson was going to come and replace Danny? On the other hand we have John Brantley who filled in for Tebow at Ky and slaughtered them...off the bench!
