My sister and I drove to Pittsburgh from Jacksonville on a Thursday (I think
it took 14 hours), stayed Friday and Saturday with our other sister and
drove back on Sunday. It can be done, and it's not even that bad if you're
with someone with whom you love to travel... in a red convertible with the
top down... in May. :-)

How long of a drive is that, Jerry?
It has got to be a couple of days. It takes me about 10 from here to
Pittsburg, if I remember correctly.

Actually, I think meeting at a pre-game on-campus location is a good idea
for the future. It should reduce the parking problem since people would be
getting to the area a little earlier to come to the function. I like the
idea of meeting somewhere on a somewhat regular basis so it becomes a
"tradition". If it’s a noon game, perhaps we could have a Breakfast
cookout. Meeting sufficiently early would allow people to do some of their
own pre-game things after the GatorNet activity.
Perhaps we could try something like this during BB season as well,
especially if it is in January.
Jerry
p.s. I just wish the drive from PA was shorter!

I really enjoyed spending some time with the list members that were able to
make it to the tailgate on Saturday.
Compared to the last two picnics, this was a very low key affair, and, one
might even say, a bit of a bust. I'll take the blame for that - the planning
was certainly less than stellar.
I waited too long to let everyone know the where/when details for one thing.
I wanted to have it when Randy L. would be in town, and he'd told me quite
some time ago that the Kentucky game was likely the only one he'd be able to
make it to.
Of course it wasn't until a couple of weeks ahead of time that they
announced the game time. The late kickoff afforded the opportunity to meet
before the game, but as I found out, that presents its own set of issues.
People have their own pre-game rituals, places to park, etc.
Despite all of the obstacles, we had a smallish, but nice gathering. I got
to our chosen spot by Lake Alice just about noon, in plenty of time to
secure a spot near one of the picnic tables there.
The frame for our canopy had been wrecked by high winds at our Relay For
Life event back in May, but Leslie bought me a replacement frame not long
after. As soon as we parked, Jason and I started setting up the canopy and
as we tried to raise it, pieces of it were breaking off left and right!
Great - now we wouldn't have shelter when those predicted rainstorms swept
through. You know - the rainstorms that caused me to abandon plans to bring
my grill and cook out.
If you were in Gainesville on Saturday you're probably wondering, "what
rainstorms?". Exactly. Turns out it would have been a perfect day for
grilling - mea culpa!
No doubt the biggest disappointment was that Randy L. and his daughter were
unable to join us. A disclaimer (excuse) here - I don't own anything that
has GPS capabilities and have never used them when traveling. My son who
lives a ten minute walk from the tailgate spot told me he'd get me GPS
coordinates so that I could provide them to Randy. To my absolute shock, he
never got around to doing that.
I googled "UF bat house GPS coordinates" and, at a site called
wikimapia.org, coordinates ( 29°38'39"N 82°21'45"W ) were returned that
looked reasonably close to Gainesville on my map (remember maps?) and there
was a satellite image of the roof of the bat house. So I felt secure in the
knowledge that what I sent to Randy could lead him to us...until I got his
phone call saying that he was WAY south of town!
Bottom line - I enjoyed spending some time with Helen, Leon & Paula, Darlene
and her husband Todd, and Randy Platt and his friend Jim. I pledge to try
and do a better job next time with the planning and execution phases of this
event.
In the meantime, any of you are welcome to stop by and say hello, visit,
have a cold beverage or two, and a bite to eat (weather permitting!) before
any late games or after any early ones. You can find us directly across the
street from the bat house (if you need GPS coordinates you're on your own)
by the shores of lovely Lake Alice.
All Gators are welcome - be they pollyannas, worry warts, or anything in
between.
