To be frank, ever since Chris Leak left, I think that we have run a
"desperation" offense.
What is a desperation offense?
One that focuses upon hitting home runs instead of stringing together
singles and doubles.
Let's not forget that, at the time he lead MLB in career Home Runs,
Hank Aaron also held the record for strikeouts.
The home run is a powerful weapon. One swing of the bat and a loss
can become a win. It is the knockout punch of baseball, sometimes the
only chance a team has is to swing for the fences.
For the past three years, we have had a lineup with a lot of home run
hitters. Harvin and Demps spring big plays. All of those dive plays
look ungainly, but they set up the defense for the home run play.
At times, it was ugly to watch but - let's give credit - over the
last two years we scored as many points as any Spurrier-team and had
back-to-back one-loss seasons. It's like having a team with Bonds,
Sosa and McGwire during their heyday - I'd tell them to swing for the
fences as well.
However, this year we either seem to lack the home run hitters or -
due to lingering injury (Demps) - they are a step slow. The
difference between a home run and a long fly ball for an out can be
slight, and the difference between a 76 yard TD run and a 2 yard gain
may be as small as Demps not being 100%.
