To further add to this story, yesterday afternoon on Sports Talk Radio here in Jacksonville, Frank Frangie and Rick Ballou were talking about Bianchi's assertion that Urban Meyer left the program with less talent than he inherited.
The gist of the discussion was that one of the main reasons Urban Meyer resigned was he did not want to face the situation of how few players he had on the roster, he cited family and health reasons but the real reason was lack of talent on the team. Frangie went on to say that we will find out after the season if Meyer is to be believed, the Ohio State and perhaps the Penn State jobs could both come open. If Meyer takes one of those jobs, then he probably lied when he cited family and health reasons for leaving UF, because 1 year off from a major job like UF and then to step into another major job like OSU or PSU would indicate that. Just passing along idle talk. Dan Hicken stated that UF has fewer Seniors on this year's rosters than in any year since that late 50's. I couldn't believe that but I decided to do some research. I came up with the following article. Take a look. Some key points from the article. UF currently has only 71 players on scholarship, that includes walkons like Dave Lerner the punter. That's 14 fewer than the limit. UF entered the LSU game with 67 players available, 4 were hurt or suspended for some reason, John Brantley, Jeff Driskell, Jeremy Brown, and Quinton Dunbar. During the LSU Game, 3 players, Jeff Demps, Ronald Powell, and Josh Evans were injured, in the 2nd half UF started with 64 available players. The 64 players includes players already designated for redshirts, like JaJuan Story and the OL we signed last February, meaning we only had in the mid-50s available. I don't remember the exact numbers, but even during the probation years of the 1980's stemming from the Charlie Pell era, we had more players available than we do now. Mike Bianchi made the point in a recent article that Ron Zook left Urban Meyer more talent than Urban Meyer left Will Muschamp, I can argue both sides of that issue, but it does make the point that UF is down on talent because we are REALLY down on numbers and no COACH can make up for that, it will take 1-2 years of solid recruiting to make up for 2-3 bad recruiting years. If Jacoby Brissett is the QB of our future, it's a great idea to get him meaningful game action now when we can all agree that we are not going to win the SEC championship. But, if it is Driskell that is the QB of the future, then we don't even have that as solace. >From recruiting rankings, Driskell seems more likely; the whole #1 player in the country thing. -Zeb -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us <http://www.gatornet.us/> -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us <http://www.gatornet.us/> -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us <http://www.gatornet.us/> -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us <http://www.gatornet.us/> -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -- GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us
