I agree. It was only toward the end of my PhD program that AC became more
common. Allow an old man to share a funny story. When Jimmy Carter was
president, he gave his famous fireside sweater speech about conserving energy.

Inspired by the speech, the president of the University (Kiser?) at the time
issued a memo stating that it was civic duty to turn off the air conditioners
(which were primarily window units at the time. His appeal went largely
unheeded , so he ordered the maintenance staff to cut off the plugs of all of
the air conditioners on campus. I was working in the computer room at the time
and much to our dismay, found the AC would not work. When we pointed out to
the president that we had delicate electronic equipment costing millions of
dollars that would fail if the humidity and temperatures were not reduced, he
agreed that he had made a mistake and ordered maintenance to re-attach the
plugs
on our AC units. This is where the story gets funny. The electrician arrived
to re-attach the plugs when he observed that the AC units were mounted high in
the room and over his head. He simply looked at us and told us that his union
would not allow him to work over his head and that he would have to take the
unit down. He then said that the unit might as well go back to the electrical
shop where he could perform the task more easily. We responded that he could
do
that and asked that he do that right away. He responded that we would have to
have another union task group come and get the unit down first and then he
left. When the “get the thing down” union worker got there, his team removed
the air conditioners and set them in the floor. We then asked that they be
delivered to the electrical shop when the “get the thing down” union worker
informed us that the transportation union worker would have to transport them.
We finally got the transportation guys to take the units to the electrical
shop,
got the units repaired and then returned. We then got the “get the thing
down”
union workers to raise them back into place. By this time it was getting very
warm so we asked them to plug the units in when we were informed that their
union was not allowed to touch the electrical plugs and that we would have to
call the electrician to plug it back in and then they promptly left leaving the
cords dangling. Knowing that the electrician would not be able to plug the
units in because they were over his head, I asked my boss to slip out of the
room a minute. While he was gone, I climbed up and plugged them in, and turned
on the AC. Only in America…

There were no air-conditioned classrooms when I was there 63-71.

I had a $1,200 scholarship that pretty much covered everything--tuition and
living expenses for the whole academic year. Of course back in the day we had a
lower standard of living than today's kids.

Ken,
I have no idea what it costs to attend UF. Can you share? When I was in
school, I think it cost something like $129 per semester or trimester and
you could take as many hours as you could fit in. I took 18 or 20 hours one
semester. I could be wrong about the $129, but I think it is close. I am old
as dirt, though.

Thanks all. But, holy crap UF is expensive as an out of state student! I
hope the financial aid package comes back a bit sweeter than the estimates.
Right now, UF is the most expensive option of all the schools, including
Northwestern and Carnegie Mellon.

Also, it appears we are still waiting on confirmation if he is in for the
Fall. He is accepted into the new Innovation Academy, but at doesn't stay
until Spring. Should find out this week if he is also accepted for Fall.

Still excited, just feeling really poor...
