Mardi Gras Returns To Its Activist Roots

Sydney, Australia) A shift to the far right in Australian politics brought Sydney's Mardi Gras back to its roots as a protest for gay rights.

An estimated half-million people lined the streets under a moonlit sky for the annual gay parade.  They cheered, they danced, and they demanded an equal place in Australian society.

Marti Gras began as a demonstration for gay rights 28 years ago.  Since then it has grown to become one of the world's biggest gay festivals - attracting people from around the globe - and over the years its emphasis turned more to partying and less to LGBT civil rights.

But, this year the feisty spirit of Aussie gays was back as marchers called for full marriage rights - something the government banned last year.

Characterizations of Prime Minister John Howard and US President George W Bush featured heavily in the parade that had 130 floats.

On one float, Howard and Bush were being married.

Among the marchers were a Prince Charles holding hands with a rough drag Camilla.

This year's grand marshals were Vicki Harding and her partner Jackie who were made famous after they and their daughter were featured on a popular Australian kids program.

Just as the packed streets represented a league of nations, so too did the march.  Participants from more than 80 nations were represented in the parade, many of which still consider homosexuality a crime.

The lead float this year was a symbol of the nations which have criminalized homosexuality and carried a call for civil rights in Afghanistan, India and Iran.

But there was still time for frivolity.  There was an assortment of outlandish costumes, drag queens, and leather boys.
