The maharashtrian rural traditions are amazing. The laavNi and Tamasha are the main non religious folk traditions here. We all have seen quite a few Tamasha films like Pinjra.
Theres often an effeminate character alongwith the main performers. This naachya, though easily accepted in the show, is always the laughing stock for the viewers. He does some fillers to fill up the gap in between the main dance performances. The naachya is referred to as maushee by the ladies of the troupe and he has an access to all the ladies quarters where the men are not allowed. Some films even show the side characters flirting with him.
The naachya was made immortal by Ganpat Patil. I remember seeing Ganpat Patils interview on TV, many years ago. It was rather sad that this man had to suffer so much in his life because everyone thought he was
really effeminate and thus impotent. He married later on and became father. (Sorry, dont remember how many children.) But it was very difficult to convince the father to give his daughter to Patil. Perhaps towards this part of Patils life, an interesting film was made, with Patil in the lead role. (Again, sorry for not remembering the name of the film.) This film was also shown on the TV, in which the protagonist is a naachya and then he falls in love with a girl. The girls father is furious and so the lovers elope. I clearly remember a scene where, the naachya goes to visit a doctor to determine whether he is really a man and if he can be a father. Finally the protagonist becomes a father. I think this was Patils last film as a naaachya.
Ive also heard some stray comments about the vaghya-mura^Lee, the kha^ndobas dancers, but would not dare to venture. Firstly because that is a religious folk tradition and then
because I know very less about it.
Anyone wants to add more info to this naachya or vaghyaa-mura^Li topic?
Cheers
Shailesh
