Intimates

Don’t you care for my love? she said bitterly.

I handed her the mirror, and said:
Please address these questions to the proper person!
Please make all requests to head-quarters!
In all matters of emotional importance
please approach the supreme authority direct! –
So I handed her the mirror.

D.H.Lawrence

Nothing gay, in any sense of the word about this savage little poem. Lawrence
can be a striking poet, but not a very likeable one. Perhaps its because his
emotional insights are too painfully true, and he presents them so directly,
with no concessions to feelings. Its one of the first lessons in psychology,
that falling in love with someone is really falling in love with yourself as
seen in the loved one's eyes.
