I think I can speak with authority, because I am gay and I am also from the town too...
Trichur pooram had a fantastic gay past and yours truly did have hi day under the sun during the late eighteies and earl nineties. Pooram as a tourist extravaganza was great but Pooram as a meeting place for gay people has been going from bad to worse over the years. Locals have begun to know about what outsiders do in their rooms and tend to clamp down on the number of people visiting them in their rooms. Locals who know of the goings on prey on gays out looking for some fun.... A number of cruising spots have been closed down or or under constant surveillance by the cops and locals who want to have no trouble or even looking to making a quick buck. There have been cases of guys having been roughed up and being reported to their hotels in addition to their purses being emptied, or just being bashed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A good number of people from Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai plan their trip and come for the Pooram, but there is only one thing I have to advise all those who go... AYOR.. At Your Own Risk. It is an international tourist attraction, and gets a wide range of media coverage. It is also a great time for the gay community when in the evening hours say from around 7pm, the grounds gets men from far and near, especially the national and the international crowd and then the cruising begins and there is a real great time for the gay men, who find, pick and enjoy a wide range of choices. The spirit continues for almost four days as long the festive days remain, the preparation for this fire work extravaganza is almost through out the year, and it all culminates on these 3/4 days with lot of fun and frolic. It is a kind of competition between two temples to show who is more powerful and wealthier with all the rich and tradition customs, the elephants running to hundreds are well decorated and colorful umbrellas are rolled and rotated running to thousand and more different varieties.... But the fun that the gay community gets here is amazing, you can find men from all parts and there are also lot of joints where they can have a quickie with no inhibitions, as it happens all around. The rooms in the hotels are booked almost a year ahead, and men from the gay community wait and look forward for this even. Come and join the fun and get the taste of the hairy, thick mooshed and charming mallu men whose below the belt statistics need not be talked about and more from across the country and world......
