Based on the mystical branch of Islam, Sufi music seeks to unite listeners with the Divine. The pain of separation from the Creator is at the core of Sufi lyrics and music; and hence the longing to dissolve the physical realm and transcend into the spiritual Universe with Sama'a, the practice of listening to music, chanting and whirling, finally culminating in spiritual ecstasy. Sufi music is practised in different regions of the world through myriad genres. We will be going for Sufiana compositions by Wadali Brothers and group: Puran Chand and Piyare Lal Wadali, popularly known as Wadali Brothers, represent the fifth generation of musicians devoted to singing messages of Sufi saints. As ardent practitioners of Sufi tradition, their repertoire includes poetry of Amir Khusrau, Baba Farid Sahib, Bulleh Shah and folklore associated with the region of Sindh-Punjab such as Laila-Majnu and Heer-Ranjha. The duo specialises in genres such as gurbani, heer, kaafi, ghazal and bhajan and has numerous albums to their credit. With their vibrant and full-throated voice, mixed with rustic Punjabi expressions peppered with the idiom of classical music, Wadali Brothers have created a niche in the Sufi music world today. They have also made forays into Bollywood with soulful songs; Darda Marya, Hey Rangrez Mere and many others. Wadali Brothers will present a bouquet of sufiana compositions, including traditional works and songs from their popular albums and films.
