Our solution was to make the mobile VPN clients use
the office DNS server as the primary DNS server all
the time, since the office DNS server can resolve
both internal and external addresses.

This adds some overhead to the DNS lookup, but with
most of the VPN clients using DSL or Cable, it's
not noticeable.

The PCs with the VPN client are configured to use
a publicly accessible DNS server for secondary DNS,
so that the user does not loose Internet host name
resolution if the VPN goes down.

Using Netswitcher, we were able to setup up a "VPN" profile that changed the
DNS/WINS settings (and other settings if needed) on the mobile client to use
internal DNS/WINS servers. Internal host names could then be resolved
successfully while connected to the internal network via VPN. After a user
was
finished, they could toggle back to their original settings without
rebooting.
It was worth the $14.00 per client price to have this functionality.

We have since graduated to a Cisco 3015 VPN Concentrator with a
Cisco-provided
VPN client that switches the DNS settings automatically when connected.
