Correct; I didn't make it clear that this in a colo facility, so all
there is between my pair of GB's and the ISP's edge router is a dumb hub
(not even a switch; there's no other reason for it here).

I know that ideally, for a true HA setup, each GB should go to a
different router (or at least interface) within the ISP, but for this
setup, that's not possible without mucho $$$. Similarly, the ISP isn't
particularly co-operative about changing their router filters; to be
fair, were I in there shoes, I probably wouldn't be either.

So, assuming I don't want to be pinging somewhere "public" (eg Google or
Yahoo), how should I best proceed, such that HA doesn't shutdown a good
interface when the other one in the pair goes bad?
