I try to avoid using SMB/CIFS through NAT when I can. I have not tried
doing any extensive work through it on the Gnatbox. I always use IPPT with
my dmz when that is necessary. Perhaps it is a NAT quirk? Hopefully
someone else can shed some light.

NAT.

Basically,

Protected = 10.0.0.x
PROPSN  = 10.0.20.x

I do have a COLO segment that is Pass through and using bridging -- I'm
going to try and see how file sharing works through that network
segment.

If this problem was happening with our old GB-1000, it wasn't as
apparent as it's been since we got the GB-1200 earlier this year. Also,
one thread I saw somewhere mentioned MTU settings on firewall and
whatnot, but I don't think that's an option with the GB.

Are you attempting this through NAT or are you using IP Pass-Through
Filters?

Done by both name and IP address, and same result. And remember,
sometimes it is working and you wouldn't even know a problem. But then
if you try and copy a lot of small files, it'll abort somewhere in
beginning, middle, or end...

I've even checked all the ethernet wiring from machines, through
Gnatbox, switches, etc.

I searched on google a few weeks ago, forgot the exact phrase, but found
a LOT of people with same type of problem but no mentioning of a good
solution...

Have you tried using \\IP.ADD.RE.SS\Share instead of machine name or
perhaps adding the server's IP address to your hosts and lmhosts files?

No, machines are standalone. They do not have access to internal DNS
and don't have any WINS servers -- since not in a domain, DNS shouldn't
be an issue right?

Are these machines on your domain? Have you created rules to allow the
servers to access your DNS and WINS servers on your protected network?
How are you doing name resolution?

Has anyone experienced weird file sharing issues through Gnatbox, like
going from a Protected interface to dev/dmz/pro interfaces?

The problem is pretty sporadic, but it's hard to keep a decent drive
mapped on servers in our dmz from our protected network. And if I
bypass Gnatbox and put servers in dmz on protected network there are no
problems.

I'm not saying it is definately a problem with Gnatbox, but I think with
firewalls in general and Windows file share protocols. Nothing is shown
as being blocked in/out in logs.

We have about 500 active connections listed in GB, and the utilization
%'s and all look ok.

For example, if you try and go to \\machineindmz\c$ some of the time
it'll just error right away (\\machine\c$ is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource.), eventually you'll
get a user/pass prompt and put it in... and sometimes it'll bring up C$
right away or take a long time. Working with ASP files in Ultraedit is
very cumbersome when trying to save.

On some of servers I've enabled FTP and WebDav, but WebDav is slow for
copying files and FTP just annoying with the way we code on the dev
servers.

Any tips?
