Actually the old cctools was broken and should have treated it as an unresolved symbol. And that was fixed in 4.0.0 by me by http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2004-06/msg01477.html -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26547
