Patch bootstrapped, regtesting in progress. With checking enabled I have this
which is not bad at all.

tree STMT verifier : 197.87 (22%)
expand : 21.19 ( 2%)
loop analysis : 10.96 ( 1%)
global alloc : 276.20 (30%) <-- i think this is due to
ENABLE_CHECKING
We still consume more than a GB of memory though.
