If the initialization is removed, all works correctly. If the module is compiled separately and the object file linked with the main program, it works correctly, as it stands..... The root of the problem is in build_common_decl, where the backend_decl for the equivalence union seems to get lost for some reason. In consequence, two decls get made, which possess ASSEMBLER_DECL_NAMEs. For some reason that I do not yet see, it matters if they are initilized or not.
