This has been true since at least 3.3 so I don't understand why you think this is a new problem. Solaris's /bin/sh is not a POSIX shell so it is hard to produce portable code to a non standard shell. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=32045
