I have also verified that the SEE pass (sign-extend elimination, but also should handle zero-extend) fails to handle this case. And that pass doesn't exist anymore on the trunk anyway. I wonder if we can optimize this in GIMPLE already... -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=40487
