I wouldn't break backward compatibility and deviate from Sun Studio just because of the dubious goal of enabling TLS on antiquated Solaris versions. Nobody cares about GCC implementing TLS on those versions in 2010! -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18788
