proposed 4.6 patch

Here's the 4.6 backport of the sol2.h patch.  Could you please give it a try on
Solaris 8 on bare metal?  I've bootstrapped it without regressions on
sparc-sun-solaris2.8 and i386-pc-solaris2.8.
