While your test case ICEs with 4.6 and 4.7 (internal compiler error: in lhd_set_decl_assembler_name, at langhooks.c:158), it works with the current trunk version (if you add "use thing"), so it should also work with the upcoming release 4.8.0. Note that there are still some known bugs, though (cf. comment 39).
