Aldy's work would have to be backported to gcc-6. or 2. gcc-6 goes out of support I don't think this bug warrants backporting patches to gcc-6. So the path forward is via #2. gcc-6 will go out of support when gcc-9 releases, which will most likely happen in the sprint 2019.
