It's "fixed" - in that the more defensive coding around the select calls no longer triggers the hanging case. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any conclusive reason why the select calls are getting incorrect input in the first place. So, we can close this bug but perhaps remember in the back of the mind that something (unknown) is still not quite right with the select usage.
