On Linux, yes, but Iain pointed out in private mail that Darwin/i386 is broken in a similar way. The native as doesn't understand --32/--64, so many configure tests go wrong, unlike Darwin/x86_64. I'm working on a patch. Should we keep this PR open for this or handle it separately (new PR or without)?
