I note that this bug is also present in GCC 16.1.  Resolved by the proposed
change.

Regression testing results:

Tests run on a NetBSD/amd64 host, targeting NetBSD/vax, test artefacts executed
on NetBSD/vax 11.99.6 under SIMH
