A static arhive, which wasn't compiled with PIC, was built. With my patch, libiberty tries not to build the static archive, which, of course, isn't supported by libiberty. I will submit a patch to ignore --disable-static. But I have no idea how --disable-static in libiberty could have worked on all platforms for binutils.
