Here's an incremental patch to the API, with all the proposed name changes to make the whole thing more consistent (the conventions are made explicit at the end). It covers all changes we've discussed in this thread, except for the default args stuff, because of the potential problems that I've just raised in another subthread. Please let me know what you think, before I proceed to adjust GCC and GDB to match, so that I can test it and submit a revised consolidated patchset (and a full incremental, with all the other changes I've made so far) One point of uncertainty to me is that the expression-building entry points don't take filename and lineno, unlike those that deal with decls and types. The reason for that is that expressions are not even present in debug info, let alone with line number information. Some are direct references to DIEs in debug info, but most expressions are just taken from mangled template signatures. Now, if you envision any chance that this might some day get standardized in debug info so as to carry line (and column?) number information, it would make sense to add these arguments (including column; maybe ranges?), so as to avoid having to make API changes to that end at a later time. As for column numbers and ranges, maybe we can introduce them in the future without additional arguments to existing entry points, through alternate calls that build fake line numbers out of combinations of line and column, or even out of a range. That's something to consider if/when we decide to take that step. diff --git a/include/gcc-cp-fe.def b/include/gcc-cp-fe.def index 7fcd484..8b8b11c 100644 --- a/include/gcc-cp-fe.def +++ b/include/gcc-cp-fe.def @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ /* Interface between GCC C++ FE and GDB -*- c -*- - Copyright (C) 2014-2016 Free Software Foundation, Inc. + Copyright (C) 2014-2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
