Note this formula does not work for data = -1 for instance,
since 0x01010101U * -1 = 0xFEFEFEFFU
but memset(str, n, -1) set it to 0xFFFFFFFFU, right?

So are we sure that the value of "data" is always in the range [0..255] ?
