Will any of the libraries in gcc now require gmp/mpfr such that both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of gmp/mpfr must be installed? If that is the case, will the multilib build look for both a lipo 32- bit/64-bit combined shared library in $prefix/lib as well as individual versions in lib and lib64 subdirectories?

If you want to build darwin native and cross compilers and canadian cross compilers all at once, it is easiest to have built the libraries universal, other than that, no, they can be thin for the build system. The search path doesn't change between 32 and 64 bit compilers as I recall.
