i'm pretty sure those guidelines are for people making their final redistributable source tarball ... since you shouldnt be regenerating autotools with that package, you shouldnt include the libtool.m4 in the sourceware case, regenerating the files happens often so the .m4 should be included to match the ltmain.sh ... very weird things can happen if the libtool code that makes it into configure (via the .m4/aclocal) is a different version from the ltmain.sh ... i like the one where shared libraries are generated but they lack the '.so' suffix :) -mike
