I can't answer your specific questions, but anyway I see a problem
here, namely that Maxima requires ANSI Common Lisp, and the banner is
advertising CLtL1 (Common Lisp the Language 1). You can build GCL as
an ANSI CL via the --enable-ansi flag for configure. ANSI CL might be
the default for very recent versions of GCL, although I'm not sure.
