At the moment, the only active effort is Ryan Lortie's to replace
gconf with a new API (called "dconf"). This looks like a good
direction.

If we go toward dconf, then the best thing to do with gconf is leave
it untouched and avoid breaking it, while apps slowly migrate to
dconf. A disruptive port to dbus is pointless for something that's
deprecated anyway. The rule for deprecated stuff should usually be
"don't touch it" (this is the rule for GTK 1.2 for example).

I think the Nokia tablets are actively using a port of gconf to dbus,
though, so for embedded devices you could copy their code.
