Shawn, The nodata value at the band level (GDALRasterBand::GetNoDataValue() / SetNoDataValue()) is a real number, so there's no complete solution. Usually parts of the application that take into account the real part of complex numbers and compare it to the nodata value to determine if the pixel is nodata or not.
There's an exception however in the warping code where you can pass a nodata value formed of a real and imaginary part.
