You can build the SVN version with the option --prefix=the_full_path_to_your_home/a_temp_geany_dir (note you have to spell out your home dir no ~) ~/a_temp_geany_dir/bin/geany will be the executable, run it with -c to specify where you want the config to be. Thats how I test things.
