I'm seeing exactly the same problem here on an eeepc, no gears
settings. The sample didn't work, but I first noticed trying to get
gmail offline to work ...

I've installed gears both ways - through the firefox add-ons interface
(0.5.32.0) and apt-get install gears (0.5.32.0~svn3391+dfsg-0ubuntu1)

Am running an up to date Ubuntu 9.10
