Sweatshirt - This version off the Mozilla Add-ons site works for Firefox 3.6, both standard and portable versions. The official version from the Google Gears site should work okay for 3.5.8.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13492 (for 3.6)

Once Gears is installed, check it out to make sure it's working ( make sure you get a dialog box when clicking on "Tools/Gears Settings", etc). If it is, which it should be, you can ignore the error message you referenced in your message. It's a minor compatibility checking glitch in the Gears coding and actually means nothing.
