Hi--

I have been using distilled water for my Malaysian cat geckos because there seems to
be some question about the ability of this species to metabolize the minerals in other
waters. There isn't a great deal of information on this-- what I have found is
primarily anecdotal. I did not realize that there was a potential for distilled water
to actually leach minerals. Without more specific studies as to what this gecko's
mineral sensitivity actually *is,* I wouldn't know what other kind of water to use.
Does anyone know anything about this, or if there are other species that have similar
sensitivities? Is there some sort of water that would be more beneficial?

Jennifer

In reply to Katt:

That's the exact reason why distilled is not used in fish tanks. If I
remember right from chemistry, distilled is pure H2O, pure hydrogen and pure
oxygen. No other components. Thus the reason why it's used in lab
experiments. Because of this, and if I remember right, distilled has a
tendency to leach minerals in order to achieve equalibrium, basically what
Katt said.

Personally, I use both tap and RO. I use RO in my turtle tanks and when I
mist cages, so I don't get stains, and tap for everything else.
