Further to this issue, I've been looking at the code I wrote in x_print.c, 
specifically related to setting properties of the dialog class.  The 
g_object_new() call is passed correct values to set the saved defaults -- I 
checked that -- but those values don't seem to be being propagated to the 
set_property() method of the class.

Anyone who's got more familiarity with GObject programming, I hope you can 
help me out!
