I've been in the habit of putting layer #'s on my copper layers and arrange them like this:


 [ 1 2 3 4]

where the [] indicate a region free of any planes and the "1" is on the top layer, 2 on the 2nd, 3 on the 3rd, etc. They are offset just like I typed. This way I can take my board, hold it up to the light and at least on a 4 layer board be sure that they did the stackup the way I want (the 3 is harder to see than the 2). Its also a good sanity check for the layers (don't forget the 4 is _backwards_ when viewed from the bottom layer.
