Your comment reminded me of something I saw on the KiCAD list yesterday: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/kicad-users/message/2329 They wanted to know how to use the footprints available on gedasymbols.org in KiCAD. You never know how a sym file might end up being used, but I would not keep that from changing things.
